I think I wrote some of the words for the verses. As far as I know, this is a co-write that was set up by John Mayer, and is not a cover tune.
The first verse was fictional, or something strictly out of Adam's or James' life, so I left it out. He/they may have had a similar story to mine, but from my end, the rest of this was about a guy I knew, and me. The genders were somewhat turned around when it was recorded by Maroon 5.
I unfortunately don't have fuel-efficient habits, and drive around to think alone. The guy in question used to live across the bridge from me, and hated his doorbell, which he called the "heart-attack buzzer;" so, we worked out other ways for me to announce my arrival. (Another song on the same Maroon 5 CD references a "Heart Attack.") My guy didn't really leave me out in the rain as much as the song claims. And most of the "begging" was mine, while most of the saving or "catching" was by him. I tried to leave him a million times, he finally left me, and yeah, it was really hard for both of us to say good-bye.
